According to the past World Conference on Higher Education report of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), there were more than 2.5 Mn students studying outside their own country in 2009. UNESCO also predicted that the number of international students might rise approximately to 7 Mn by 2020. US had the maximum of approx 0.65 Mn international students in 2009.
In 2010, international students grew to 2.8 million out of which Western Europe hosted the largest proportion at over 41% followed by North America at 24%.US had 0.73 Mn foreign enrollments in 2010-11, followed by the UK, Australia, and Canada, respectively with 0.33 Mn, 0.28 Mn, and 0.27 Mn registered overseas students. The number of international students at colleges and universities in the US increased by 6% to 0.76 Mn during 2011-12.
China and India account for nearly 40% of international students, with rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa accounting for another big chunk of this market. Global universities employ the services of local admission counselors in these markets to tap into the local student pool aspiring for international education.
